Ex-Nigeria and Ghana internationals have spoken glowingly of Globacom’s initiative in setting up the Glo Soccer Academy during the inauguration of the academy in Lagos.
The academy formally took off in Lagos on Sunday after two months of rigorous screening in 10 locations across Nigeria, Benin Republic and Ghana.
Nineteen boys were dropped during the semi-final which ended on Sunday while 33 successful boys moved into the academy after an impressive ceremony witnessed by soccer administrators, Nollywood icons and selected football fans.
Many of the 19 lads who did not make it wept uncontrollably, but the coaches advised them to take heart as they have the potential to make it in professional football.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony and presentation of the 33 finalists who entered the academy, ex-FC Liege, AS Monaco and Borussia Dortmund player and Nigerian international, Victor Ikpeba said the Glo Soccer Academy was the “greatest CSR in football” he had ever seen.
While encouraging the boys to make the best of the opportunity offered by the academy, he said “Glo had created the right environment to incubate and breed world class stars that will make impact on world soccer right from the age grade competitions to the World Cup in the years to come.”
Also speaking, ex-FC Cologne and Ghanaian international, Tony Bafoe said the Glo Soccer Academy was a fantastic reality show, adding that “the experience will teach the boys to be good men in life as well as good footballers.”
“You can combine academics with football. You can combine books with boots. It is a win–win situation,” he told the boys.
