Nigeria: Again, Gunmen Kill Eight in Plateau
In less than two days after six persons were hacked to death at a drinking joint at Gindinakwati in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State, gunmen struck again yesterday in Riyom LGA of the state, killing one policeman and seven others.
It was gathered that the assailants had laid ambush in various strategic parts of Jwol village and opened fire on a group of policemen attached to Jwol outpost who were on routine patrol.
An eyewitness told LEADERSHIP that the gunmen, armed with sophisticated weapon, overpowered the policemen on patrol and succeeded in killing one Corporal Istifanus Samaila before the others fled into a nearby forest.
LEADERSHIP checks also revealed that the gunmen, while leaving the scene, accosted four other persons at Sopp village and gunned them down as well, while one escaped narrowly with bullet wounds.
A police source further disclosed that the gunmen destroyed farm lands along their way, while entering the two villages they had attacked before they were eventually repelled by some of the natives who summoned courage to launch a counter attack.
Also two men coming from Ganawuri market were found dead with bullet wounds close to their village yesterday at Jebu near Sop in Riyom LGA.
Earlier yesterday, the villagers reported another body of a woman found around the market.
The lawmaker representing Riyom in the Plateau State Assembly, Hon Daniel Dem, confirmed the incident.
According to him, three people were killed early yesterday morning, including a security guard at a primary school at Hawan Kibo who was matcheted to death by unknown gunmen.
The State Police Public Relation Officer, DSP Emmanuel Abuh, who confirmed the latest incident, said the only person that sustained injuries was receiving treatment at Plateau State Specialist Hospital.
He called on the people of the affected areas to remain calm.
