The Germany-born attacker also revealed the possibility of switching allegiance to Nigeria, and insists that his club have the ability to finish in the top five of the Bundesliga.
“We didn’t play the best that we can [at the start of the season]. We lost in Dortmund, and played out a 0-0 against Metalist Kharkiv. We’re doing well, but missed the step up to the top,” the former Germany youth international told Goal.com.
“I’m doing well. After my injury this summer, I’m getting more and more practice. The coach [Sami Hyypia], uses me more often as a substitute but I think I will be in the line-up again soon.
“I think we have to be in the top five. But secretly, we hope for the top three. It’s our duty to reach the international competition places, and we also want to impact on the Europa League.
Sam also reacted positively to comments made by Jupp Heynckes, comparing the midfielder to Bayern star Robben.
He continued: “That comparison means no pressure to me. I’m happy and motivated by it. Robben is a fantastic player and an idol for me. I hope to get where he is one day.
“I’ve already had contact with the Nigerian [Football] Association, when I was a child, because of my father. But at the moment, there is no talk. I focus on Bayer Leverkusen. But generally, it would be interesting, I will be thinking about it,” he added.
