Zamfara ANPP backs INEC on shelved polls

GUBERNATORIAL candidate of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), Abdulaziz Yari, has described the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to postpone the National Assembly election to today as a good step aimed at addressing problems that might cripple the credibility of the elections as a whole.

Meanwhile, the postponed elections would have faced serious challenges in the state due to the non-presence of security personnel in some polling units last Saturday.
When The Guardian visited some polling units in Maradun Local Council, there were no security officials there, a development some council officials attributed to the shortage of the security personnel.

Over 500 foreign and local observers accredited by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were deployed to Zamfara State to observe the National Assembly elections that were re-scheduled for today.

The state resident Resident Electoral Commissioner, Ibrahim Jibril Zarewa, told journalists yesterday at a media briefing in Gusau, that most of the observers have arrived in Zamfara and reported to commission in the state.

Yari said: “We are in support of anything that will facilitate the conduct of a free and fair election. So, this postponement I think, is in order and we are ready to continue supporting INEC to have a free and fair election.
“The decision of the INEC boss is a right decision. This is because all we are saying, especially we in the opposition, is let the election be free and fair. Let Nigerians understand the situation and continue to cooperate with INEC boss”.
